Testing a New Performance‑Based Rating System in 2026
More competition, more fun for everyone.
Presented at the 2025 BAMA Annual Meeting
What’s Broken Today
Stagnant Fleet
Only 3–4 boats show up and win repeatedly, which reduces motivation for the rest of the fleet.
Hard for New Racers
New sailors struggle to become competitive because their starting rating does not reflect real performance.
Static Ratings
Ratings stay the same all season, even when a boat consistently sails above or below its handicap.
How the New System Works
Start with Base PHRF + DPF
Each boat begins the season with its usual Base PHRF plus a Dynamic Performance Factor (DPF) that will move over time.
- Existing racers: DPF is based on the average performance index from recent seasons.
- New racers: DPF starts at 0 and adjusts as results come in.
Score Each Race with PI
After every race, each boat gets a Performance Index (PI) based on how its corrected time compares to the winner.
PI = Boat’s Corrected Time ÷ Winner’s Corrected Time
Update DPF Over the Season
Over multiple races, each boat’s average PI nudges its DPF up or down within defined limits, keeping the fleet fair and competitive.
Adjusted PHRF = Base PHRF + Dynamic Performance Factor (DPF)
Why This Is Better
More Boats in the Hunt
Ratings react to performance, so more boats have a real shot at a podium over the season.
Fast Learner Protection
New sailors aren’t punished immediately; their rating moves as their results stabilize.
Transparent Math
Simple formulas and clear limits make it easy to see how and why ratings move.
Season‑Long Story
Each boat’s rating history tells a story of improvement and performance across the year.
What Day One Looks Like
Pre‑Season Setup
Compute starting DPFs for returning racers from 2024–2025 data and load the fleet list.
First 2026 Races
Run early‑season races, record finish times, and compute PIs for each boat.
First Adjustments
After a minimum race count, apply the first DPF updates and publish the adjusted ratings.
Questions, Concerns, Ideas?
BAMA will pilot this performance‑based rating system in 2026 with clear documentation, open data, and a feedback loop from the fleet.
